I was born in the Pacific Northwest and have lived in this region of the country my entire life. This means that I was raised on seafood. Fresh salmon, manilla clams, Dungeness crab, halibut and so on. I love seafood. It is hard not to when it is so fresh and delicious. For many people, they enjoy the experience of eating clams and mussels (throw them in a Paella and MAGIC!), but the idea of cooking your own at home is completely foreign. The reality is that it is not that difficult.
This recipe by Foxy Folksy demonstrates just how easy it really can be to cook up a batch up Mussels in white wine. So read her recipe and shopping advice, then head out to the store knowing that you’ve been armed with the knowledge of how to cook mussels like a pro. Your guests will be amazed when you bring them out of the kitchen, and more amazed at how they taste. You’ll be grinning because only you will know just how easily your delicious mussels in white wine recipe came together.
Wine Pairing Suggestion: Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is a great option for pairing with many seafood dishes. This mussels dish is no different. I mean, you’re cooking them in white wine! The crisp acidity that is found in many sauvignon blancs will partner wonderfully with the flavors of mussels and clams. The one thing to look for is a Sauvignon Blanc that was either in neutral oak or stainless steel. This is not the time to bring in the vanilla notes that oak will impart.
Specific Wine Idea: K Vintners 2012 Sauvignon Blanc
With a nice acidity and lots of flavorful notes of minerality, this Sauvignon Blanc by K Vintners is an excellent pairing idea for your Mussels in white wine. If you feel like splurging, grab a bottle to cook the mussels in, and a second to serve with them. Otherwise find a cheaper bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with which to cook the mussels, and serve them with this wine.
